Perched on top of a pile of huge boulders, The Rockpile feels a bit like being in an upscale treehouse. Up a series of rock pathways interspersed with 49 stairs, the view of the lake, less than 50 yards away, is phenomenal and the house, built in 1935, exudes the charm, serenity and rustic elegance of Tahoe's bygone days. The views and setting are unsurpassed. The place has soul.

You can't beat the premium location in Brockway. You are minutes away from practically everything the area has to offer with popular Speedboat Beach, which is only a 3-minute walk, and larger King's Beach with water-sport equipment rentals only a 3-minute drive. Pristine hiking and biking trails, markets, fine restaurants, and almost all of Tahoe's notable attractions, including the small North Shore casino area, are all within minutes of the property.

The Rockpile has 3 comfortable bedroom areas spanning several levels, each of which is accessed from the outside via its own entrance with no interior staircase. The top floor consists of the kitchen, master bedroom, 2 bathrooms, 3 decks (1 with a hot tub, another with a BBQ), and an inviting living room complete with a large fireplace, 2 sofas (one being a queen sofa sleeper), a dining table, and a wall of windows with a 180-degree view of the lake.

The kitchen, though small, is very efficient and exceptionally well equipped. Enjoy the sunset and dinner on the lakeside deck which affords a sweeping view of the lake to the northwest. The BBQ deck, located outside the kitchen, looks towards the south and east while the back deck, nestled in among the boulders, affords a peek toward the east side of the lake and provides a cozy, very private place to have breakfast with the early morning sun, get out of the late afternoon wind, or to enjoy the hot tub.

The Squirrel's Nest is down one level. This bedroom features 2 Twin beds, a bathroom, and a small closet. Down a few more stairs and you will come to The Dog House, a charming small cabin decorated with dog memorabilia, with a Queen bed, bathroom, and electric fireplace, as well as a microwave oven, coffee pot and electric water kettle so your guests can let you sleep in while they have a cup of coffee on their own private deck.

The Rockpile blends old charm with modern amenities including wireless internet access and a 52" flat screen TV with expanded basic cable and a DVD player (located in the master bedroom). Out the kitchen and one level down from the main floor, there's an office with plenty of counter space, perfect if you need to get a little work done during your stay. A washer and dryer are tucked into this room, as well.

The Rockpile is one of 3 houses at the end of a private road. The owners live full time next door (at the bottom of the stairs) - the owners and other nearby neighbors ask that there be no loud music or parties at the house which would destroy the quiet and serenity of the area.

Just like most homes in Tahoe, this home does not have AC and is not advertised on the listing. We suggest opening the windows!

Amazing place with so much character and charm

by Fernando M.
My friends and I had a great time at this place. The architecture is amazing and the house was clearly built respecting nature and landscape - which we loved it. The views are also great highlights! Totally recommend it and even looking forward to returning sometime soon.
Hi, Fernando! We are so happy that you enjoyed your stay at the Rockpile Treehouse! We can't wait to have you back so be sure to reach out next time you make plans to visit the area!

The Rockpile is awesome

by David L.
This is an Old Tahoe property, part of a family compound begun in the 1920s. the Rockpile was built in the 30's by an artist and it shows, including some of her art on the walls. It is not slick, modern, or any of that. This means the floors creak, the doors are sticky, and the place has character coming out of the pores! We loved it. The view from every room is of the lake, the decks are stunning, the hot tub was hot when we arrived and gave us an incredible view of the stars, it is 5 minutes' walk to Speedboat beach, and the ultimate in privacy. The one caveat I would add is the Rockpile is quite unique. There are 3 bedroom/bath combos but each is on a different level accessible only from outside. So you get great separation but it might not be ideal for small kids. Also, it is quite a lot of steps to the top. We are in our late 60's and we made it - and it is worth it when you arrive - but if you have mobility issues this is not the place for you. For everyone else, though, it is heaven.

Perfect location

by Tim H.
very well located property - close to many nice restaurants and hiking trails. The local visitor center was very informative and we used many of their suggestions. Finally, beautiful big lake views - just what we wanted.

A reflection of the soul of Tahoe

by Linda S.
My husband and I decided to celebrate our 25th anniversary in Lake Tahoe, one of the few California destinations that we had not yet explored. After spending 4 days in the historic town of Truckee, we changed locations to the Rockpile for the second half of our romantic adventure. The Brockway Rockpile Treehouse captured our hearts and delighted our senses from the moment we arrived! As its name implies, the multilevel home was thoughtfully integrated by its architect into the rocky landscape to create a true sense of continuity with nature and a deep spiritual connection to the lake. Many aspects of the home and its architecture are revealed as surprises to the visitor, so I’ll resist the temptation to describe details so as not to spoil your own surprise. Suffice it to say that the Rockpile Treehouse has literally everything that you could possibly want (or need) to create a memory of a lifetime. My husband and I are fortunate to have stayed in many spectacular VRBO gems during our 20 years as Californians; the Rockpile is, without question, among the very best. If you value a home’s architectural roots, its historical significance, and its deep connection to family and place, then look no further. You can read all about the amenities on the VRBO site, and you can certainly peruse the marvelous pictures, but until you park your car in the lakeside cul-de-sac where this incredible home resides, ascend the rocky steps to the doghouse and beyond, and take in the sights and sounds, you cannot truly understand the treasures this home has to offer. It is true reflection of Lake Tahoe’s soul.

Great Tahoe Experience

by Chris W.
What a great house and location! Tahoe is a special place to begin with and you can't beat the views from this charming house nestled in the rocks. Several decks to hang out on and enjoy a meal or cocktail. A quick walk to the beach that is quintessential Tahoe with clear water and beautiful boulders that the kids played on. One TV in the master bedroom, which is perfect to keep up to speed on the current sports, but we were there to relax and that is exactly what we did. The house is very charming. Our kids are 11,13, and 15 and they had their own little hide outs for bedrooms. Probably not an ideal place for younger kids or older folks as there are a lot of stairs. Great kitchen that has everything we needed to cook and grill. Location is close to King's Beach and Incline Village if you need anything. In the end this is a very comfortable house in a great location to chill out for a few days. Very comfortable beds and furniture. Will definitely be coming back!

Loved this place 🙂 watched sunrise, sunset and moonrise from all the decks. Cooked up big family dinner with the stocked kitchen. Bed/baths were all private and comfy. Location to beach was perfect. Thanks for letting us stay in this spiritual, soulful place!

Beautiful and unique place for the weekend

by Elena G.

I can't decide what is better- view from the living room or view from the porch. Both are better ??. Location is brilliant - if you have a paddle board or kayak, it is 3 minutes walk to Speedboat beach, probably best place in a Kings beach for kayaking. If you like easy family hiking, it's 45 minutes walk to Fire Overlook. 5 minutes drive to the restaurants and shops of Kings Beach. House is clean and friendly, quite unusual (for example, 2 out of 3 bedrooms are completely separate, like separate small cottages with bathrooms, connected by outside stairs) and this is only make it more charming and special. We will definitely come back- we just love it.

Rock Pile Treehouse...Lake Tahoe Adventure

by Anonymous

Rock pile treehouse was a wonderful place to stay. The house is nestled within the natural structures of large boulders & trees. There are beautiful views of the lake from the main room, patios and atop the boulders. The house has a unique style of the 1930s and tells a story of ?its history. ?????? The kitchen is well equipped. The beach is an easy five minute walk, which gave us many opportunities for short and long visits to the lake. The hot tub is a wonderful place to warm up, with a beautiful view of the lake in the day and the stars at night. ?The owner lives just down the hill and was very kind and welcoming. Grand Welcome, too was thorough and communicative in arranging all the details of our visit?. We definitely recommend this as a wonderful place to stay & experience the wonders of Tahoe.
