Planning your trip to the Smokies

Adventure and activity can be found year-round in the Smoky Mountain area, but it is best to plan ahead for the time of year you should visit depending on the types of things you want to do and see.

As elevation in the Smoky Mountains can vary greatly, as does the area’s weather. Rainfall averages in the area are high, and temperatures can fluctuate 10-20° from mountain base to the top, so you will want to pack for a variety of weather.

Based on local tourism, the peak months for visitors to the Smoky Mountains are June, July, and October. Summer months will undoubtedly bring more outdoor opportunities. Temperatures range in the 80s and 90s, yet cooler in the more elevated regions.

During the fall, the spectacular colors of changing foliage is on full display. With dry, cooler temperatures, it is the perfect time to explore the park by foot, just be mindful that you will face high volumes of crowds also there to take in the beauty.

Lower visitation happens in Spring and Winter, despite there not being any shortage of activity. If you are interested in more of the cities and surrounding areas of the park, this is a perfect time to visit to avoid the masses.
