Highway 290 — the famous "290 Wine Trail" — runs right through the area, with dozens of wineries between Johnson City and Fredericksburg, making it the second most visited wine destination in the United States. Nearby standouts include William Chris Vineyards, Lewis Wines, Westcave Cellars Winery & Brewery, Texas Hills Vineyard, and Becker Vineyards, among many others.
For craft beer lovers, Real Ale is an world wide award winning brewery. Pecan Street Brewing in downtown Johnson City combines artisanal beers, great food, and live music in a classic Texas setting. Nice N Easy is a sweet watering hole just off the square in Johnson City, with great drinks, great owners, and a very cool vibe.
Whiskey fans won't want to miss Garrison Brothers Distillery in nearby Hye — the first legal whiskey distillery in Texas and the first outside of Kentucky to produce handcrafted, corn-to-cork bourbon. Tours of the ranch are an experience unto themselves.
A True Texas Town:
Johnson City offers the best of both worlds — small-town charm and access to wild, unspoiled beauty, without the crowds of Fredericksburg.
