Manta Ray Night Dive and Snorkel

The famous manta ray night dive in Kona is widely regarded as one of the most memorable dives around the planet. Swimming with the manta rays is one of the Big Island activities you shouldn’t miss. The manta rays that live in the Hawaiian waters are so-called reef manta rays and are the second largest species of manta rays in the world growing up to a wing-span of 18 feet. Look for a tour operator who operate under strict and self-enforced standards to protect the manta rays.

Whale Watching

Whale season on the Big Island is between November and April. Humpback whales spend their winter months in the waters around the Hawaiian island to raise their calves. You can spot them from the shore but the best place to see them is up close on a boat tour as professional guides will know the best spots to catch sight of the whales. You’ll also get the chance to see dolphins, turtles and sharks. The Kohala coast is by the far the best place to see the Humpbacks. January and February are the best months and March is when they have their calves. Early morning is the best time to catch seeing a whale.

The best places to spot whales from the shore are north Kona, Kohala and north Kohala and Hilo coast.  Lapakahi State Historical Park is located at the northeastern tip of Big Island is especially apt for whale watching because of its 100 foot elevation.
